On paper, The Westies checks the right boxes, but unfortunately, it feels like that’s all it’s doing. It’s almost as if no one’s heart is in it. J.K. Simmons plays an Irish mob boss more like a tired dad than a menacing gangster while Hamish Allan-Headley turns John Gotti into a lazy Italian archetype. Then you have the mostly nameless Irish goons, who don’t do much but make stupid decisions, and an underwritten B-plot about the IRA. Titus Welliver and especially Tom Brittney (DCU’s next Batman?) seem more engaged, but it’s all too toothless to stand with the likes of The Sopranos and Peaky Blinders.
