Although this series is every bit as violent and crass as The Boys, the tone is somewhat different. And while characters from The Boys do appear, these stories are largely focused on new characters. For the most part, these are good things. However, the thing working against Diabolical is the anthology format. Though the individual stories work (I really enjoyed the Looney Tunes inspired ones), the constant animation and tone changes stopped me from getting truly settled in. With only eight episodes running between 10-15 min long, you can’t really complain, but this may be one of those series that’s better off not binged.

Aside from the finale, Diabolical isn’t essential viewing for fans of The Boys, but it does manage to do some fun world building in its eight breezy episodes. Like any anthology, some episodes are better than others, but none are bad. Plus, the short runtimes (about 14 minutes each) mean even the less engrossing ones never overstay their welcome. The various animation styles and A-list stable of writers (including Seth Rogen, Andy Samberg, Justin Roiland, Awkwafina, Ilana Glazer, and Aisha Tyler) made each vignette feel fresh and unique. If you remember The Animatrix, this is basically that but for The Boys.
