Surface is the type of soapy schlock made for Basic Bs who celebrate Wine Wednesday by drinking moscato out of their “Wine is Cheaper than Therapy” glass, except it doesn’t even have the decency to deliver the outlandish twists, trashy thrills, or erotic sensibilities that usually make this type of show watchable. Despite Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s best efforts in a role that I’d bet money was first offered to Nicole Kidman, this series is built on poor and lazy writing, an uninteresting mystery, and thinly drawn characters. Honestly, everyone involved deserves better than Surface, even you.
