Netflix's global phenomenon Squid Game mostly delivers on its immense hype. The commentary on capitalism, wealth inequality, human nature, and sexism is razor sharp and illustrated through scenes of ruthless brutality that are shot in a candy-colored visual palette reminiscent of Wes Anderson. The series also features characters that have surprising depth and moments that are extremely tense, thrillingly visceral, and unexpectedly emotional. However, one subplot and a sequence at the end, both of which feel completely unnecessary, brings it down a notch. Still, this Parasite meets Battle Royale (with a hint of The Platform) is definitely worth your time.
