QUENTIN

After four very similar seasons, I don’t have anything fresh to say about Reacher, and if you aren’t already a fan, I don’t see you becoming one now. Much like how Tulsa King lives and dies on Sylvester Stallone’s macho charisma, Reacher lives and dies on Alan Ritchson’s deadpan badassery and superhero-like physique despite other aspects being downright silly. Frankly, it’s nothing more than a predictable procedural featuring frequently cheesy dialogue, exposition for the lowest common denominator, and a supporting cast delivering journeyman-level performances. Still, I enjoy its smooth-brained asskickery, so I’ll be back next season. I probably won’t review it, though.

AMARÚ

Celebrated writer Shea Serrano once said, “make 30 seasons of Reacher, and I’m gonna watch 30 seasons of Reacher.” I can’t say I disagree. For the second time this month, I’m claiming Alan Ritchson as basically America’s favorite action star, and it continues to be his combination of charm, stoicism, and exquisitely cheesy line delivery that helps make Reacher so entertaining four seasons in. This time around, there is more melodrama than dramatic weight, with the mid-season drag taking the brunt of that, but there’s no denying that the great action, likable characters, and riveting mystery still make this a pleasure, guilty or otherwise.
