Though long-winded at nearly four hours, it’s hard to be mad at this definitive look at such an enigmatic comedy legend and his alter ego. Pee-wee as Himself explores the life and career of not only Paul Reubens, but also the 1980s cultural phenomenon that was “Pee-wee Mania.” Admittedly, I grew up watching Pee-wee Herman while knowing nothing of Reubens (except, well, you know…), so I was probably more open to what this series had to say. That said, subjects this guarded and complicated always make for an interesting focus, and the fact that this docu-series is honest, heartbreaking, and touching only adds to the nostalgia.
