How many series about tormented cops in Pennsylvania can there be (Mare of Easttown, Task, American Rust)? Who’s to say, but Nocturne is the best of the bunch. The gripping performances of the entire cast — but especially Stephen Graham — mixed with the atmospheric grittiness are endlessly compelling. It also bests similar fare by telling an engaging story that interweaves the characters’ personal demons with the central case so well that it never feels like it’s sacrificing one for the other. One late twist is a little eye-rolling, but we were only given seven of ten episodes; I remain eager to see where it goes.
