On a technical level, Monsieur Spade is a very well-acted and handsome show, and as a fan of The Maltese Falcon, the noir classic starring Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade, I really wanted to like this series. However, despite a fantastic turn from Clive Owen as Spade and a hard-boiled detective approach that feels tangible, it’s undone by its glacial pacing and general lack of energy. Even at just six episodes, the struggle to, frankly, give a shit about what’s happening is real. Still, I’d be willing to give Owen another chance as Spade, perhaps in a 90-minute film instead of a six-hour series, though.
