You know, Netflix should really learn to trust its audience, because the only thing saving Man On Fire’s probably-network-mandated, pedestrian and repetitive storytelling from sinking an otherwise solid show is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s excellent performance. His deep melancholy mixed with sheer determination has shades of the bad-ass that was Denzel Washington in the 2004 movie, but his subtlety and underlying rage differentiates him enough to make it his own. This, plus a breakout role from Brazilian actor Iago Xavier, carries the strong action and interesting enough story beats to make up for the uninspiring execution.
