His Dark Materials’ final season is ambitious to a fault. The ideas are grand, the worlds are vast, and performances from the likes of James McAvoy (Asriel) and Ruth Wilson (Marisa) are large enough to fill them. But they aren’t the only characters we follow in this labyrinthian finale. Eight episodes simply was not enough to wrap up multiple storylines weaved within its intricate mix of religious and science-fiction based lore, leading to questions being answered too quickly and problems solved too neatly. These final episodes, while thrilling, would have felt more organic if granted an extra season to breathe.
