As a person who likes but doesn’t love the recent Dune movies, I wondered how a prequel series might hold up without the cinematic budget, technical acumen, and overall grandeur of director Denis Villeneuve. Turns out, it makes for an exceedingly dull affair that generically plays like Game of Thrones in Space. The performances are fine, I suppose, but the characters (of which there are way too many) are wholly uninteresting, failing to give the audience a reason to invest in the convoluted story that lacks the stakes and shadowy intrigue it’s so desperately trying to capture. Prophecy is only for the nerdiest of Dune nerds.

Right away, you can tell that Denis Villeneuve’s spice is missing from this prequel series because Prophecy falls far short of the expectations set by his films. Its narrative is extremely sluggish and very heavy in exposition, resulting in me not caring about any of the characters. Plus, the ensemble's performance is quite dull. Rather than making a name for itself in the Dune universe, the series felt more like a Game of Thrones soap opera. I'm honestly not quite sure how this show was renewed for a second season, given its dreary plot and some absolutely awful visuals.
