You might be wondering who needs a new Cape Fear adaptation considering there already are two great movie versions. It’s a valid question that series creator Nick Antosca fails to answer. Everything but the most basic premise has been “re-imagined,” with Antosca overstuffing the plot with annoying characters, silly twists, and poorly fleshed-out mysteries to fill ten episodes. Plus, the tone is distractingly operatic, trying way too hard to emulate director Brian De Palma’s campy thrillers of yesteryear (think Snake Eyes). The only thing that kept me going was Javier Bardem’s menacingly charismatic performance, but frankly, after all is said and done, I probably shouldn’t have.
