Brothers feels a lot like Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson heard stories about Adam Sandler making movies just to get paid to hang with his buddies, and — light bulb! That’s not to say it’s bad, as it has the obvious charm that only McConaughey and Harrelson can deliver, but it is extremely uneven. The story vacillates between being overly sentimental, amusingly meta, and surprisingly lowbrow, with a loose take on the disruptive houseguest trope surrounded by half-baked subplots. Still, between the leads’ natural chemistry, scene-stealing turns from Lisa Gilroy and Holland Taylor, and an appearance by Melba Toast, Brothers is a pleasant enough diversion.
