Despite lackluster characterizations and random dream sequences that muddy the waters, the first half of this miniseries sets up an intriguing, if unoriginal, psychological thriller. The tone is nearly perfect, as there is an ominous feeling of dread lurking just below the surface thanks to Eve Hewson's performance. However, in episode five, it shifts genres with a reveal that is patently ridiculous, while still insisting on taking itself very seriously. From this point on, everything buckles under the weight of its own absurdity, leading to an absolute bonkers ending that's too dumb and derivative for even a fun "WTF!?" moment.
