American Hostage has a semi-fatal problem: Dead Man’s Wire, a movie based on the same incident, released earlier this year. This adaptation certainly isn’t poorly done, telling the same story from the press’ perspective; there just isn’t enough material to justify another retelling so soon. The performances are great, especially Giovanni Ribisi’s, but despite playing more like September 5 than taking the aforementioned film’s Dog Day Afternoon approach, the show feels like watching an eight-hour rerun. On the plus side, it’s an anthology; with a new story next season, it’s worth a second chance. This inaugural season is just the victim of poor timing and coincidence.
