My familiarity with the Unabomber story was strictly through pop culture references as opposed to real news stories and information. With Unabomber, I got more insight into Ted Kaczynski (Jacob Tremblay) as a person with a history instead of a domestic terrorist. While the film’s cast had some heavy hitters, I couldn’t help but think of it as a watered-down Zodiac, especially during the investigation storyline. Some of the characterizations weren’t gripping and there was incongruity with the performers and the muscles they got to flex. It lacked energy and depth and care, as if it was just another Netflix mid-level effort.

Unabomber feels like two completely different movies thrown into one. On the one hand, it’s a psychological look at Ted Kaczynski’s (Jacob Tremblay) time at Harvard, while on the other, it’s a more straightforward story about the manhunt that led to his capture. Both stories are intriguing in their own way, but they don’t blend together as well as one would hope, and the movie ends up feeling like another aggressively mid Netflix movie that could’ve had potential. Unfortunately, it’s flat, lacks intensity, and doesn’t leave much of an impression.
