There is a cyclical nature to movies and how, after innovation, comes a retreat to nostalgia. The Whisper Man returns the crime thriller to the era of the 1990s with its straightforward investigation, dark tones, and slow mystery reveal that an audience could guess by the beginning of Act Two. It was also reminiscent of a season of the series Dexter but trimmed to a 110-minute streamer, which shortchanges any attempt at subtle storytelling, sorely missed here. While there is some generational father-son relationship exploration, the script and some of the acting choices don’t bring satisfying conclusions to those dynamics; blink, and you’ll miss this.
