I enjoy writer-director Aaron Sorkin’s work. Listening to smart people explain the intricacies of things I know about but don’t fully understand through fast-paced dialogue is kinda fun, especially when Sorkin expertly walks the line of being playfully, humanly arrogant. Sadly, The Social Reckoning is missing that human element. It’s well acted (Bill Burr is magnificent) and the story is interesting, but every time something thrilling occurs (which is often), it’s undercut by a line or action that an out-of-touch old man or an algorithm mimicking humanity thinks is cool. It’s a “how do you do, fellow kids” follow-up to a modern masterpiece. It makes me sad.

The real reckoning we have to have is with Aaron Sorkin. It’s been known that his direction has failed his elevated writing in the past, but when it comes to The Social Reckoning, his writing can’t even bring the fire he’s known for. There’s really nothing here to hold onto. The talented cast are bad, it’s not engaging in any way, and what it has to say about Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg’s (Jeremy Strong) ego is just a half-baked version of what The Social Network addressed flawlessly. It’s a tremendously awful waste of time and one of 2026’s worst films.

Don’t get me wrong… The Social Reckoning’s subject matter is interesting, but the film’s execution isn’t compelling in the slightest. The real reckoning here is for Aaron Sorkin’s writing and direction. This dialogue-heavy film is flat and lacks passion, not to mention its structure is extremely clunky. As expected, Mikey Madison is excellent, and Bill Burr is a surprise standout; beyond that, this sluggish film doesn’t have much going for it. Unfortunately, this sequel to The Social Network fails to live up to its predecessor.
