After The Grand Budapest Hotel, Wes Anderson's output was following an unfortunate pattern: far too many characters, way too unfocused narratives, and too much reliance on his lovely, albeit stagnant style. With The Phoenician Scheme, while not flawless, he's rectified those issues. It drags in the middle, but its plot is cohesive, fun, and heartfelt in its portrayal of family and faith. Plus, he's playing with his form a little bit. It also doesn't hurt that this might be the funniest he's ever been. I want to see this evolution from Anderson continue because this is my favourite from him in over a decade.

I have to preface this review by saying I’m not really a fan of Wes Anderson’s films. That being said, if you’re a fan of Anderson’s trademark style and characters, The Phoenician Scheme feels in line with his previous works. Aesthetically, it’s a treat to look at. Performance-wise, everyone is committed (Michael Cera is a standout). Comedically, there are quips and clever visual gags. But for me, this dragged, the story structure was wonky, and it’s emotionally cold. Then again, those are the same issues I’ve had with many of his films. So… enjoy?

Considering the divisive responses to Asteroid City and The French Dispatch, both of which I enjoyed, it seems as if some feel that Wes Anderson’s formula has become stagnant these days. With his latest, The Phoenician Scheme, I’m starting to see where they’re coming from. Though there’s an unexpected darkness to the film’s nature as it muses on spirituality and redemption, the film lacks a needed emotional core, and Anderson’s usual tricks (beautiful visuals, great needle drops) have trouble masking that. There are some enjoyable performances and clever gags, but this ultimately ends up being one of his lesser efforts.
