The Love Hypothesis is a pretty paint-by-numbers romantic comedy that doesn’t do much with its writing or style to stand out from others in the genre. With more of a slow burn and stronger character development, its heart and charm could’ve shined through more, but instead, it rushes toward its happily-ever-after ending. While every beat is pretty predictable and cliché, those moments are at least cute and enjoyable. Plus, our two leads, Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman, have great chemistry and do a solid job of bringing their characters to life.

I didn’t expect much from The Love Hypothesis as it sounded like a premise siphoned through a Hallmark Channel keyword generator. Then, I learned that the concept of the book was originally a Star Wars romantic fan fiction for Rey and Kylo Ren, and it changed the filter through which I watched it. Beyond it taking place in Stanford with smart, scientific dialogue, this was as pedestrian as could be for a romantic comedy. Lili Reinhart is so good at science and Tom Bateman (Daily Ridley’s husband) is always dressed in black, so imaginatively, for space, it could’ve been fun, but here…blasé.
