In the same way that Liam Neeson action films grew to blend together the more he knocked out, Jason Statham films almost exist as a sub-genre. You don't go in expecting or even considering greatness, you go in looking for a bunch of ass-kicking and a solid way to kill 90+ minutes. Shelter is exactly that but with less wit than some of Statham's recent efforts. It follows the format of many other films, but director Ric Roman Waugh films it with a more intimate and grounded tone that worked in the favour of the story and the violence. I’ll take this over The Beekeeper.

Does this sound familiar? A mysteriously stoic man who has a seemingly innocuous lifestyle is secretly a government killer for a classified program, and now must become a one-man army because of some personal vendetta. If, while reading this, you’re picturing Jason Statham, it’s because I just described his last couple of films, and his newest one, Shelter. While I see the appeal of these movies, they are evidently not for me, and I need to stop watching them. With Shelter’s grey colour palette and tone that takes itself too seriously, was I even supposed to have fun here?
