Much like last year’s How to Train Your Dragon, the live-action Moana was my introduction to the franchise. So, even though this was seemingly a shot-for-shot remake, it was new to me. That said, its flaws are apparent. Things don't start well as Catherine Laga'aia struggles to find her footing early on as Moana, but once "Disney Dwayne" appears on screen, his charisma instantly elevates her performance and lets her voice shine. Unfortunately, there's something missing in the transition to live-action as Moana relies too heavily on a distracting amount of CGI and ends up feeling quite shallow. It all adds up to another unnecessary remake.
