ROBERT
The Guy Ritchie cinematic experience has morphed slightly in the 2020s, where his reliance on slow-motion violence and British witticisms has waned, becoming less stylized. I believe In the Grey is the first attempt to meld his past filmmaking tendencies with his current storytelling vision, and it hit quite a bit. It is slick, cool, tense, and action-packed, even without skimping on detailed explanations of successful corporate loan retrieval. The acting left something to be desired, and some key backstory was missing to really cement the connection between the leads. But, criticisms aside, I would sign up for a sequel today.

AMARÚ
Guy Ritchie has to be one of the most fun directors to work with, especially for regulars like Eiza González, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Henry Cavill. All three are in full “I’m about to eat the hell out of this entire movie” mode with In the Grey. It’s tough to literally spell out what is happening and what is about to happen without sounding boring, but Ritchie’s thrilling action and sheer momentum, propelled by an ensemble who perfectly fit his timbre, ensure this film isn't. Each year, Ritchie delivers quietly on these no frills, straight forward action thrillers, and every year I will be there.
