In the Blink of an Eye is an unnecessarily ambitious, slightly disappointing film. It follows three stories from different time periods that span across millennia, and although I know the stories are meant to be connected by vague themes of human connection, love, and survival, they still feel oddly random and aimless. There is a visual reminder of how the stories relate, but the 90-minute runtime doesn’t allow for any meaningful character or story development. The prehistoric timeline is the most compelling, but the present and future ones are not emotionally engaging, and it feels flat overall.

As an avid moviegoer, I don’t tend to miss a point of why a film exists all that much; In the Blink of an Eye was an exception. There was a fascinating attempt here to use three storylines to show how the general tenets of human life and connection haven’t really changed, even with the advent of technology and evolution, but the constant jumping between each timeline only succeeded in creating visual dissonance. The casting choices were wild, especially Kate McKinnon, who even when toned down gives an aura of manic energy. There is a real Cloud Atlas vibe with this, which isn't desirable.
