Forgotten Island, the latest offshoot of the Spider-Verse franchise’s influence, is the cinematic equivalent of two caffeine pills dipped in Red Bull chased by a Five-Hour Energy. Its vivid animation and tremendous needle drops push the nonstop pace through gorgeous scenes with never-ending stimuli being thrown at you for two straight hours. I loved every second. Deeply steeped in Pinoy culture, every new vibrant illustration creatively embraces the powerful messaging of friendship, family, and how life’s memories are too mighty for time and space to tear apart. I wanna call my boys now and tell them I love them. Then I’m gonna need a nap.

I don’t know how much cocaine was ingested when making Forgotten Island, but it’s not zero. This movie is filled with an overstimulating amount of anarchy and style, and rarely gives you a second to breathe. For some, that’s just too much, and I can understand that. For me, the energy was well complemented by the heartwarming story at the centre of it all: a story of being stuck, and realizing that the people we love will show us the worth we have. If you can make me laugh and get emotional at the same time, you did something right.
